31 Days, 31 Ways to Bring Joy: Day 23: Love

I don't think it's possible to say or hear the words
"I love you"
without feeling joy.
via http://www.etcpb.com
Today's task is easy:
Say it.
Say "I love you" to someone you love.
Heck, say it to EVERYONE you love.
You can even say it a few times...
no one who loves you too is going to turn you away!

31 Days, 31 Ways to Bring Joy: Day 20: Treat Yourself

It's  Tuesday. For some reason, Tuesday has a bad rap for being a "not great day".
I guess I get it...the weekend is over
and reality of the work week has set in.
My solution to "a case of the Tuesdays"?
Treat yourself!
image from blog.stitchfix.com
 Go ahead, get that latte.
 Extra cheese? Yes, please.
A manicure? Why not?!
It's life's little pleasures that sometimes seem to bring the most joy.
So, grab a pal, take a break, and
TREAT YOURSELF!

31 Days, 31 Ways to Bring Joy: Day 19: Wave Goodbye

Unless you have managed to perfect the practice of time travel,
here is a tip for you:
You can't change the past.
No amount of brooding, thinking, perseverating, or  fixating on it will make it different.
The past has happened, and that is that.
What you CAN do, however, is to reflect, take your lesson, and wave goodbye.
Use your energy and new found knowledge to make today the best it can be.

31 Days, 31 Ways to Bring Joy: Day 18: Read those Mags

If you are anything like me,
you have quite the collection of magazines stacked up somewhere in your home.
photo via theguardian.com
Yes, blogs and websites and email newsletters are the way of the world,
but nothing compares to a great glossy in your hand.
Each month they arrive, beckoning to your with their siren calls of
new recipes, fashion, skincare, and maybe even a little bit of "grown-folk" advice.
You have work, or school, or kids, or life, and the time passes by.
Before you know it, the next round of magazines shows up to join the pile.
Today, I invite you to take some time,
make a cup of whatever you brew,
and read them!
It *should* bring a touch of joy into your day today.
Enjoy!

31 Days, 31 Ways to Bring Joy: Day 16: Reflect

Sometimes we feel up, sometimes we are down.
There are even times when we start to forget what it's like to laugh or to smile.
We may even lose touch with what "joy" really even means.
These are the times when it is important to look back at our lives
and out into the universe and take stock of all of the
amazing things that make up our world.
Give silent thanks for our blessings
and search for the lessons in our grief.
From that reflection, I hope you will find calm and joy in your most sacred memories.

31 Days, 31 Questions About Weddings...Help Me Please! Day 14: Music

Day 14 Question:

What is the most affordable wedding music option, and is there a ballpark idea of what we could expect to pay for a deejay (about 5 hours)?
Are there any interesting alternative music options out there?

Fantastic 14: Day 4: Knick of Time

Today I am featuring one of my favorite romantic/vintage/DIY blogs: Knick of Time.

Take a stroll (or some clicks...however you like to think of it) through this site and you'll quickly find that you are inspired, excited, and even a wee bit envious.

Ok, you'll need peanut butter for your jelly sandwich.
(jelly = JEALOUS!)

Angie, the beautiful brains behind this amazing blog, pulls together gorgeous, simple projects and ideas that give a new meaning to the term "fabulous".

On Tuesdays, you can take some time to peruse the amazing bloggers and their pages during
Knick of Time Tuesday, a highly popular (and very well curated!) linky party.

Through her Antique Graphics Wednesday, Angie shares THE best vintage graphics (gratis, I might add...) to help her many readers take some of these ideas and turn them into reality.

How adorable is this vintage luggage tag graphic?!
As if that wasn't enough, Angie shares a plethora of valuable ideas and projects in her Project Gallery. One of my very favorites is her Furniture Makeovers, where she takes the most ordinary household accessories and turns them into something amazingly special and unique.

Friends, I cannot say enough about Angie and her gorgeous collection of posts at Knick of Time. I invite you to follow the Knick of Time blog, "like" on Facebook, and follow on Pinterest, Twitter, and Hometalk. Happy hunting!

31 Days, 31 Reasons to be Thankful! January 1: Family

Welcome to 2013! I am thrilled to be ringing in the new year with a new series: 31 Days, 31 Reasons to be Thankful. Some may say that the season for giving thanks has passed, but I think that the arrival of the new year is the perfect time to reflect, count your blessings, and prepare to take your life's bounty and move confidently into the future.

Today, I take the time to honor my #1 reason to be thankful: my family. I am honored to be a part of a quirky, loving, sarcastic, slightly dysfunctional yet fully supportive and overall amazing family. As I write this, I am enjoying the final day of my trip to Florida, where I came to visit and spend New Year's with my brother. We laughed until we cried and cracked sarcastic jokes for 4 days straight, making this one of my most favorite times of the year. Yesterday, my mom text messaged me a picture of her television screen showing the score of the Pittsburgh Steelers game: a MAJOR technological feat for her and her special way of saying that she was thinking of us. The day before I left for Florida, my stepmother called me to wish me a good trip because she remembers everything and never lets an event, appointment, and even the smallest milestone go unacknowledged.

My dear Bubbie, although she passed in June 2011, continues to play an influential role in my life and my business. I often laugh when I think of what she'd say in certain situations...and most times that is what guides me to the right decision. Bubbie always said that she was my #1 fan, and since she has been gone my Aunt Patti has taken over that role and become my best business "partner" and friend. Aunt Patti has been with me for some of my biggest bel monili moments, including flying all the way to Texas for my first Country Living Fair, hopping behind my table to help me at NOCC's TEALtini, and coming armed with Starbucks and comfortable shoes at Handmade Arcade.

Sure, there were times when my family has had issues. We're more Bundy's than Cleaver's...but that's what I love and there's nothing in the world that I would rather have.
As I move into 2013, I am so thankful for the wonderful times I have had with my family and for the memories we will create in the coming months.

Today my wish for all of you is that you can take a moment to reflect on YOUR family and share your favorite moments in the comments below...good, bad, or otherwise hilarious. Happy New Year!

Back to School

I suppose it had to happen. Every year (since the beginning of time, apparently...), summer comes to an end and we find ourselves settling into the reality that fall is just around the bend.

I most often write about my jewelry business, but at this time of year in particular, my "day job" responsibilities inevitably return. In addition to designing and creating upcycled vintage jewelry, I am a speech-language pathologist at a suburban elementary school. It is a career that I absolutely love, mostly due to my absolute and unconditional passion for my job and my school. As I prepare to once again pack my lunches, iron my dresses, and brew my morning decaf, I am reminded of just how fortunate I really am. Tomorrow, I will walk into my school and welcome 59 brand-new faces into our kindergarten class and will calm down the parents of these 59 newly liberated children. I will talk about the things these children will learn, the experiences they will have, and the joy we as teachers will have in educating this fresh new crop of students.

In my world, it is the end of the summer, not January, that marks the new year. The commencement of a new school year wipes the slate clean and gives us all renewed hope. This year, I will have the opportunity to teach children how to communicate, how to learn, how to make friends. We will count money, play games, and learn lessons every minute of the day. I will dress them up for Halloween, trace their little fingers for Thanksgiving turkeys, and hand them ornaments to hang on my all-pink holiday tree. I will take them on a hunt for Leprechauns, fill plastic eggs with erasers and plastic bunnies, and help them paint flower pots for their mothers. Then, in June, I will once again pack up my classroom, exhausted yet (hopefully) thrilled with the year's accomplishments.

People often ask me how I am able to balance my energies between being a speech-language pathologist and running a (pretty darn nice!) small business. I can't lie: it is, at times, completely exhausting. But, after thinking about it for awhile, I think I can safely say that focus is the only answer. When I am at my school, I am Miss McClure the Speech Teacher 100% of the time. Between 8:30am-4:00pm Monday-Friday, my entire world revolves around my role in the education of these wonderful children. On the other hand, I am fortunate enough to have a balance that allows me to leave work at work, and I return home at the end of the day to pick back up as Lucy, the artist behind bel monili. I create my wares with love, keep up to date with my online matters, and happily pack up my Subaru to head out to the next wonderful show.

So friends, tonight is my New Year's Eve. I wish you all health, happiness, and prosperity in the year to come, and I hope that when our paths cross, we will each have joy to share.

Weddings!

Summer is the season of love, and bel monili is a friend to the brides! This summer, I had the distinct honor of creating goodies for 5 beautiful brides and their respective bridal parties. This is truly a favorite for me; I LOVE the idea that one of my creations will have a place in someone's family history.
A bridal sash, custom created with satin ribbon, lace from a vintage bridal gown, and antique rhinestones and pearls

As you know, bel monili items are created using vintage materials, meaning that these beautiful bridal pieces are created using materials rich in history. Perhaps it was a brooch from the mother of a bride in the 1920s, the earrings of a blushing bride in the 1950s, or the necklace of a bridesmaid in any of these magical times.
Custom collage style necklaces featuring antique rhinestone components

bel monili bridal can make your dreams come true. I hand-craft items that are uniquely designed for each bride's specific needs, meaning that each special day is truly one of a kind right down to the last detail.

bel monili signature vintage component cluster bracelets, designed to compliment a wedding's theme colors

Gifts for bridesmaids will be cherished (and actually worn!) for years to come, giving the recipient of the special piece a reminder of that special day, and her friendship with the bride. Custom designs for the bride offer a unique compliment to her gorgeous gown, and each piece lives on as an heirloom quality work of art.

Brides, bridesmaids, mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers...take notice and get your thinking caps on. bel monili will work with you to custom design the bridal accessories and gifts that will add the perfect touch of sentiment to your special day.

Working!!!

Oh, friends, how the time flies. Tonight, I find myself here in my workshop on the cusp of August, wondering where my sweet summer went. Soon September will be here, and the madness of the fall schedule will begin.

I start off on Saturday September 8  at the Sewickley Harvest Festival, where I'll set up along with over 100 vendors to sell handmade wares in the streets of Sewickley.

Sunday September 9 is one of my favorite days of the year: the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition's (NOCC) Walk to Break the Silence. This year's event takes place at North Park bright and early in the morning. I will be there wearing several hats: I am the tee shirt distribution chairperson as well as a vendor with the I Made It! Market. Last year was a great success, and this year you'll find LOTS of teal items from bel monili.

I've got a little over 6 weeks until I'm off to the Country Living Fair in Columbus, Ohio. As far as national shows go, this is definitely the big tamale. To be honest, I can't really even think too much farther than that! So, for now, here's what I am doing with my time:

I have a few extra earrings to craft with,

And I am LOVING vintage feathers this year.

Rhinestones are a perennial favorite,

but I know I can never go wrong with enameled flowers.

So, wish me luck, keep your fingers crossed, and make sure you come out to see bel monili this fall!

January 31: Agnes Wozniak, Agnes' Antiques

Agnes Wozniak, Agnes' Antiques
Those of you who know me, or who have read my blog, have seen this photo before in the NOCC post. Today, on the final day of my blog series, I want to tell you a little bit more about my Bubbie, Agnes Wozniak, and just one of the many things that made her special.

Agnes opened up her little shop, Agnes' Antiques, in Pitcairn, PA in the early 1990s. As a child, I had the incredible fortune of living right up the street (5-6 houses up) from her shop, so every day she was open I got to run down and "play". As an adult, I now know the value of the closeness and time we had together. It was within the walls of that little shop that I observed some of the finest examples of how to live a good life, how to treat others, and how to become an excellent businesswoman.

Agnes' Antiques quickly became a landmark of sorts in the little town of Pitcairn, PA. Her storefront was small, maybe 300-400 square feet at the most. In it, you could find wonderful treasures that she had uncovered in her travels...pretty teacups from Turtle Creek, crystal beads from L.A., and many, many beautiful lamps, linens, and trinkets from some of her closest neighbors in Pitcairn. Agnes knew her customers and what they liked, but more importantly, Agnes' customers liked her.

Making a stop at Agnes' Antiques wasn't always about buying or selling something. When you walked through the door, you would often find Agnes sitting at her pretty little desk enjoying a fresh cup of coffee and reading Country Living or the local paper. She always had at least one other seat in the shop open, and in hindsight she probably could have charged admission for the privilege of time spent in that seat. She received visitors from near and far who sought out her advice not only about antiques or valuables, but about decor, personal style, social concerns, event planning, family, medical issues, spirituality, and anything else that they needed an expert ear to hear and advise upon.

When people asked, "how do you choose what to put in your shop?" her response was simple: "I buy what I like." Oh, and what an eye she had. If I wasn't in school and Bubbie was going to look at some things to purchase for the shop, she would often take me with her. It was during these trips I learned what turned out to be some of the most valuable business lessons I know. I've summarized these into ten simple statements, which I will now put forth to you as Agnes' Rules of Engagement:

Treat people fairly.
Don't pay any more than what you feel an item is worth.
Buy only what you love.
Dirty does not mean bad shape.
Don't be afraid to dig.
Sometimes, silence is the loudest statement.
Carry cash.
Let people think they know more than you; you'll always get the better deal.
Listen to what people have to say; you will always learn something you didn't know.
If it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

As you may or may not know, we lost Agnes to ovarian cancer on June 18, 2011. Every day, I am reminded of just how much I learned from her and how those lessons have shaped who I am today. In my art, I believe that my gift with color combinations, texture, and originality come from her. At school, my patience and love of children comes from the care and respect she always showed to me, even as a child. In my business, the application of Agnes' Rules of Engagement have helped to bring me success that I could have never imagined.

So friends, it is this tribute I leave you with on the final day of my 31 Days, 31 Friends blog series. I hope you were able to learn things, connect with people, and reflect upon the fantastic friends YOU all have in your lives. Thanks for following!

January 27: East End Fashion Magazine

Take a peek at the fantastically fabulous East End Fashion Magazine, and you'll find fashion, style, advice, and everything chic and stylish. Pretty standard for a fashion magazine, right? Well, what you don't know is that all of this loveliness is produced right here in Pittsburgh! Abby Gleason and Cassie Rusnak, two local chicks with an eye for design, have been producing this online magazine since Spring 2011 and they haven't looked back. bel monili was contacted by EEFM this past summer, and we are pleased to announce that you will be able to see fantastic new bel monili pieces in the February 2012 issue of EEFM!

The idea of EEFM developed between two friends with common passions for local and independent businesses, fashion and photography. Wanting to have a fun way to create beautiful pictures and involve other Pittsburghers of the same mind, Abby Gleason and Cassie Kay Rusnak developed a concept that is now developing here, as you see it, as East End Fashion Magazine.

East End Fashion Magazine serves the Pittsburgh, PA area with focus on the neighborhoods in the East End. EEFM believes in local and independent and will support those businesses by getting the word out through fashion photo spreads, a directory listing, advertisements and social events. By existing only online, EEFM is able to add and update photos and content more often than a print magazine, is easily accessible to everyone, and is better for the environment.
Shirt, Garbella, Bike Chain Bracelets, Erra Creations January 2012 Issue
EEFM is always looking for new people and businesses to join its passion whether it is aspiring or experienced models, photographers, hair stylists, makeup artists, fashion designers and stylists, boutiques, locations for shoots and events, and collaborators. January 19: KoolKat Designs

KoolKat Designs has had its home on Washington Road in Mt Lebanon for the past 5 years, giving local artists and crafters a home where we can sell our wares. Owner and founder Kate McGrady started KoolKat as a consignment store for local jewelry artists; today it is a gorgeous collection of locally hand-crafted jewelry, purses, scarves, stationary, and other original art.
earrings, Designs by Samantha
Interestingly enough, most of the artists represented at KoolKat are women, making it one of my very favorite places to buy and sell my wares. KoolKat began selling bel monili items in October 2011, after a meeting with Paula Nettleship. I was honored to be added as an artist at this prestigious location, and I am looking forward to a long and rewarding relationship with Kate, Paula, and the other artists at KoolKat
Felted wrap with brooch, Gelme Vaitkuniene
Their model is simple: bring in local artists and sell quality, handmade wares. You'll be impressed as soon as you walk in the door; it's a virtual wonderland of handmade goodness. A few of the artists you'll find at KoolKat are bel monili by l.marlanedesigns2C, WakulaWorks, 19 Moons, On the Rocks, Xmittens, Red Robot Creative, Studio Wagle, Huffalo, and many, many more!

The next time you are in the Mt. Lebanon area, make sure you stop by at KoolKat Designs, 691 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15228. Follow them on Facebook to keep up on the latest news and event announcements!

January 2: Green Bubble Gorgeous

Green Bubble Gorgeous Pink Grapefruit Solid Sugar Scrub
Anyone who knows Krystal Doring of Green Bubble Gorgeous will tell you the same thing: it's love at first sight. Product, packaging, and personality, this girl has got it all!!!

Krystal is a self-described "chef gone soap crazy". She says that growing up on a big family farm has always taught her that most often smaller batch homemade products are probably the finest in life. Much better than store bought, commercially processed, preservative and chemical filled. Being a Green Chef of the natural and organic food scene, Krystal is always looking for new routes of creativeness for my natural life style. She realized what harsh chemicals and additives are in all the beauty products we all like and thought, "I can make it better for you, me and the environment and be creative at the same time."

I first met Krystal at an I Made It! Market event called I Made It! Memorable in April 2011. I was lucky enough to be set up next to her, meaning that for the duration of the show I stared longingly at the beautiful hot pink and green decor, smelled the delicious natural scents (mmm...lavender, coconut, verbena...), and sampled as much of the amazing organic goodness as I could. That day, I left with a bag of pretty little Easter soaps and, shortly thereafter, called in an order for more. That's the thing about Green Bubble Gorgeous...if you think you are going to get away without purchasing anything, you are dead wrong. One whiff of the bath salts, swipe of the lip butter, or feel of the massage bar and you are hooked. I mean, can't get it out of your mind, website stalking, haunted in your sleep HOOKED. One look in my purse, my car, my desk, or my vanity will tell you that I can attest to this...

These days, I am so happy to say that I can call Krystal a dear friend. I am inspired by her personality, her drive, and her ability to take her incredible talents and channel them into something she truly loves. Green Bubble Gorgeous offers a line of fine, handmade, organic bath and body products that are unparalleled in quality, and once you try it, you'll be sure to go back time and time again.

Make sure you visit Krystal of Green Bubble Gorgeous on Etsy and Facebook to keep up on her goings-on. Lucky ducks in the Pittsburgh (and sometimes Ohio) area can see Green Bubble Gorgeous in person, but don't worry out-of-towners, you can always make purchases online!

January 1: I Made It! Market

The I Made It! Market was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 2007, the brainchild of two incredible local women: Carrie Nardini and Nina Barbuto. Their goal was simple: fill a need for regularly occurring opportunities for Pittsburgh's artists to advertise and sell their incredible wares. In May 2007, the first I Made It! Market was held at the Garfield Artworks with 20 local artisans.

I had my first experience with the I Made It! Market that same year as a shopper at I Made It! for the Holidays, held in Homestead, PA. The space was a little dark and I had to park far away, but I will never forget how amazed I was when I pulled open that door and saw a place PACKED with people, amazing arts and crafts, tons laughter, and real love. I continued to shop year after year, until I took the leap to start my business in 2010 and participated in my first show ever, the I Made It! Market at WYEP's Rock the Block. Since then, I have been blessed to be one of the "regulars" at the shows.

Today, the I Made It! Market has grown to iconic status, seeing more and more friends and success at every event. You can see anywhere from 10 to 100 local artists at any given event, and are guaranteed to find quality, locally-made, wonderful items. Carrie and Nina have done what few others have been able to do: they have given opportunities for hundreds of local artist, crafters, and small businesses to see real success and growth. With each I Made It! event, more and more artists and crafters are being given opportunities to sell their wares and join a community of people that are truly among the world's best.

Whether you are an artist, crafter, small business, large business, mom, dad, student, retiree...there is always a place for you at the I Made It! Market! There are lots of exciting events already scheduled for 2012. Make sure to mark your calendars for I Made It! Mine on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 12pm-5pm at the South Side Works.

Find out more about Carrie, Nina, and the I Made It! Market on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and be sure to sign up for their email list.
