31 Days, 31 Questions about Weddings...Help Me Please! Day 1: The Dress

Day 1 Question:

How long before my wedding date do I need to buy my dress?

Maybe I should back up just a step: I have no idea what kind of dress I want.
I am pretty sure I know what I DON'T want:

-No princess-y puffy dresses
-No strapless dresses
-No mermaid-y dresses
-No long train
-No "average" or "popular" dresses

So, once the decision is made, how long before The Big Day do I need to drop the cash and put in the order?

  1. I'd start looking now. You'll know it when you see it and if you find it early, it's a BIGGIE off of your list.

  2. I always heard from the ladies at the bridal salon I went to 30 years ago "you will know it when you see it on you". I tried on tons of dresses and it was true. Some of them I knew were wrong before I came out of the dressing room. Then there was the ONE as soon as I stepped up on the podium in front of that bank of mirrors. Go shopping as early in the day as you can before the salons get busy but then go back later in the day for your actual fittings to account for natural swelling during the day.

  3. start pinning gowns that you like in any color and in any vintage...I wore a very classic 50's gown from a relative when I got married in 1983.

  6. I ordered my dress in July, and was married in September. This gave me time for any alterations (which I only needed a few). Don't buy it too early...you may "love it" now, but as the day gets closer...you may "love" something else. For now...just have fun trying dresses on and finding the style that is perfect for you. I ordered my dress from military bride...never seen it in person and never tried it on. When we ordered it, I knew it was the one. When we received it and I put it on for the first time...my love for it was reaffirmed! You will know when you see it :) We also had a small, outdoor wedding at my father in laws home...but I still wore the dress of my dreams :) Good luck, sweetie!

  7. i think you should wait until much closer.... you may lose/gain weight ..haha..
if you buy it too soon, you have way too much time left to see others ... you will looking at a LOT of wedding stuff ....and then you may have second thoughts...so why take the chance...
    just my opinion....
oh and totally agree with someone else who said ..pick the place ... plan the style of your wedding first...... dress can wait....

  8. It seems that 6 months is the norm to allow for production & alterations. Good luck!

  11. I borrowed a dress for my wedding, so I have no idea about the timeline. I trust the other comments are correct in saying 6-8 months, though. Just for interest, I googled vintage wedding dresses and was surprised to see how many sites came up.

  12. Don't buy unless you are 100% sure! That said once you find it you will know. My daughter NEVER cries when she had on the right one she had tears. She had a hard time finding one that was not strapless. She is having a lace sleeve made out of special order lace that matches the dress. I can't wait. She will be beautiful and in a very unique dress.

  14. What I like about the dress above are the little flowers on the skirt different. When I got married I had an idea of the type of wedding I wanted found the dress and started planning from there. But in we went to Las Vegas and got married. Still wore the dress and had the same theme. How shameful am I because the reason we went to Las Vegas is because the parents gave us money (a lot) and we used it for the down payment on our house. Good Luck you will get a lot of ideas and it can become overwhelming just try to enjoy

  15. Start looking now. Stop when you find it. You will know when you find the right dress. Also- outdoor wedding? Formal? That will also help you decide!

  17. I ordered in late Jan. for a July 4th wedding - it was in by May. They can make anything work! I loved the ladies at Modern Bride in Greensburg for my dress and my two friend's. They were SO sweet and helpful.

  18. Try on different styles that you may not even consider. My daughter went to the bridal shop looking for a certain style and bought something totally different. One of my daughters ordered her dress 5 months before the other daughter waited and ordered 4 weeks before.

  19. Try on anything and everything. Dresses take 4 to 6 months to come in. Take someone with you that you love to laugh with and you value there opinion. Enjoy it.
