31 Days, 31 Questions About Weddings...Help Me Please! Day 4: Flowers

Day 4 Question:

What are some creative alternatives to flowers as decoration?

I LOVE flowers. In the spring I eagerly await the first peek of color on my sweetly scented hyacinths, the first blooms on my prized irises, that first pop of green in the landscape of dull brown. It would seem natural that I would have loads and loads of flowers at my wedding, right? Well, there are some roadblocks there.

1) I have some pretty major allergies. I am one of those people who is basically allergic to "outside", which sadly includes many of the flowers and greens I find so beautiful.

2) I just can't see spending all of that money on something like cut flowers that will simply be thrown away in a few days' time. Of course I want to have a bouquet and the wedding party will have the requisite floral adornments. I'm talking more about centerpieces and decorations.

So, I am looking for some creative alternatives (other than simple potted plants) to replace the flower decor at the wedding. Thoughts?

  2. I had a daughter that used palettes and old picture frames. She also used some old doors behind the unity candle. It may sound strange but it really looked good. I had another daughter that used and antique gate with some fencing. She did use some night blooming jasmine from our yard to put above the gate entry. It looked nice too.

  3. Well you could go with silk, but I don't know. Something simple, maybe a small vase with a single flower, in your colors?

  4. I've always loved the idea of succulents in place of flowers, even though you mentioned "no potted plants." Also, a brooch bouquet (instead of flowers) would be gorgeous and right up your alley.
Google "brooch bouquet" for ideas on that.
Candles are always nice for centerpieces on tables. Good luck on your endeavor!

  6. I used balsa (wood) flowers and fabric flowers with silk greenery and some pearls and ribbon. It was so lovely and much less expensive.

  7. Use your artistic talents with faux flowers & greenery. Here's something I did recently: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/566398090607757143/

  8. My caterer provided fish bowls with clear marbles and candles - and I just bought some super cheap hydrangeas at Michael's on sale and my mom did them that day. Additionally, for my table numbers, I put together a cute note about us as a couple. I really don't think you need to spend a ton on centerpieces. No one remembers them. And, sidebar, I still have all those hydrangeas should you need them! I had 6 little girls in my wedding, yup six. I bought their little bouquets at Michaels on sale and embellished with ribbon and pearls. I could see some vintage mason jars in your future - those are very inexpensive and you could definitely embellish.
